My husband Paul and I are long term residents of St. John. We love to travel and our travel almost always focuses on finding beautiful natural surroundings. My husband (a retired builder on the island) and I designed Windwardside and Sago Cottage (calabash Cottages) with the intention of providing that to like minded guests. We care very much about preserving the beauty of Coral Bay. An important part of our design process was to create homes that nestled into the hillside rather than towering over it. We are very proud of how that succeeded without sacrificing anything in terms of the view.
We take a very personal interest in our guests and never want to have someone disappointed in their stay with us. We have a small and dedicated staff that shares this view. We like to have a personal conversation with all of our potential guests. if we do not feel like one of our homes is a good fit for you we will honestly let you know that. If you do decide to stay with us you can be sure we will do everything possible to make you vacation all that you hoped it would be.
Why This Property?
We originally came to Belize on a mountain bike trip in 2002. At the end of our stay we reflected on what we had done in the previous two weeks. In addition to having a blast on our mountain bikes, we had been horseback riding, caving, hiking, canoeing, visited Mayan ruins and seen a vast variety of tropical birds. In addition we had met some wonderful people that cared deeply about their country and preserving it. We were hooked. On the way back to the airport we stopped into a real estate office and grabbed a business card. We returned three weeks later. We made an attempt to to be open minded about other locations in the country but we had already seen this area and this beautiful river. Our purchase was a little considered rash decision and one that we never regretted. In the years since we have traveled around Belize and never come across a property we would have preferred.
Designing the house and building it was a pure joy to us. Although we were already in the business of guest rentals in the Virgin Islands we did not have that intention for Riverside Villa. We designed a house that fit the way we lived- letting the natural beauty into the house from every vantage point. It’s hard to find a spot at Riverside Villa where you do not have a view of the river or the jungle. Rather than a large living room we created numerous small intimate gathering spots and as well as many nooks and cranny’s to enjoy a book or contemplate the beautiful setting. With a private nature trail, a swimming hole steps from the villa and a world class waterfall we often don’t leave the grounds for 4 or 5 days in a row.
When the neighboring lodge suggested renting Riverside Villa for us we were delighted with the opportunity. Gaia Riverlodge has been voted best lodge of the year in Belize and we know we can count on them to take excellent care of our guests.

The Cayo region is adventure central for Belize and this location provides peace and quiet in addition to access to the tours in the area. There are many activities nearby for those who wish an active vacation. The lodge can arrange for horseback visits to the jungle as well as canoeing trips into the caves of Barton creek or along the peaceful Macal River. The Mayan ruins of Caracol and Xunantunich are common day trips from the Pine Ridge as is the somewhat longer trip over the Guatemalan border to the famous ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Tikal. There is also a lovely nature trail which takes guests from the steps of the villa through lush broadleaf jungle and on to a private waterfall on Little Vaqueros Creek. A steeper trail to nearby Big Rock falls rewards hikers with a stunning waterfall in a gorgeous natural setting. Mountain bike tours can also be arranged.
Those looking for a relaxing vacation will find Riverside to be a very peaceful haven. The decks and gardens provide a lovely spot to enjoy the view and watch the birds and butterflies. A palapa at the waters edge has two comfortable hammocks that are perfect for enjoying a book on a lazy afternoon. The fast flowing section of the creek in front of the villa has numerous small swimming holes and a large slow moving pool is just a minute's walk down stream. The base of Five Sister's Waterfall is a short walk up stream. This beautiful waterfall has a lovely white sand beach, excellent swimming, a shaded gazebo and a thatched palapa furnished with hammocks.
Riverside Villa was created to take advantage of the surroundings while protecting the environment. Water is gravity fed to the villa from a pure spring high above in the hills (providing abundant pressure) and then passed through a state of the art water filtration system. Electricity is provided by the hydro powered generator at Gaia Riverlodge and the eco-friendly septic system is designed to avoid polluting the pristine river.
