Cartagena is a magical city with a fabulous colonial center and lots of historical culture as well as beaches, nearby islands, and friendly people! **THE NEIGHBORHOOD** I love Cartagena's Old Walled City, but I also love a modern building by the beach with a pool -- this building is an 11 minute (per Goo gle) walk or a US$2 taxi ride to/from the Old Walled City, so is the best of both worlds. It's located in the Cabrero section which is quiet & residential. The historic Rafael Nuรฑez House and Apollo Park with chapel is a short walk away (on the way to the Old City). The beach is across the street. There is a pharmacy/mini-mart on the building's ground floor, another mini-mart/fast food place around the corner, a larger grocery store about a 5 minute walk away, and a cute burger/beer place just a couple of minutes walk also. There are a handful of other small restaurants/grocery stores also nearby. The magical Old City itself is steps away -- you'll love wandering the maze of quaint streets with their colonial architecture, shops, restaurants, museums & little plazas. **GETTING AROUND** The apartment is a 5-10 minute/COP$10-12,000 (~US$4) taxi ride from the airport, a less than 5 minute/COP$6,000 (~US$2) taxi ride in to the Old City, a 5-10 minute/COP$8,000 (~US$3) taxi ride away from other sites/areas, such as San Felipe Castle (the huge old Spanish fort) or the tourist dock (for the boats to the Rosario Islands, where many prefer to go for the beach). Taxis are readily available. Walking during the day is also a great option (it's about 10 minutes to the Old City), but I advise bringing a hat and an umbrella to ward off the equatorial sun! Taxis are advised at night.

Fabulos place!
Date of Stay: May 2nd , 2018

Stunning views from the balcony, delightful sea breezes, immaculately maintained & well-equipped apartment, very informative & responsive host -- we couldnโ€™t have asked for anything more! Casa Barbara was the perfect place for an extended stay for my son and me while volunteering in and exploring Cartagena. From the information that Barbara provided, we knew how to easily navigate to the Old City and beyond, arrange for a home cooked Colombian meal, purchase fresh fruit/vegetables from the nearby vendor, join a Salsa/Latin dance class, dine on delicious meals at local restaurants, visit museums on โ€œfree daysโ€ :-) , and more. Next time we will consider availing ourselves of Spanish classes also! I would highly recommend Casa Barbara!

Wonderful Stay!
Date of Stay: November 24th , 2016

Four of us stayed at Casa Barbara in November, 2016. We had a fabulous stay in this beautifully maintained condo. The beds are comfy, we loved having 2.5 baths, beach and bath towels are readily available, and we were so pleased to have wifi, AC, hot water, and a washer/dryer! The kitchen is well equipped and everything is modern and clean. The view from the balcony is incredible, and the hammocks are a wonderful touch. Building security is good, and the pool is a wonderful option. The location is conveniently located to both the airport and the Old City. Barbara communicated well throughout the process, and we loved having all of the provided information about tours, places to visit, and things to do. We will stay here again!

In March 2016 I spent a week at Casa Barbara. The buildingโ€™s entry is staffed round the clock, and at night the building and outside walks are well lit. Two elevators offer a quick ride to the 15th floor apartment. The apartment itself is just as bright, clean and attractive as the pictures show. The well maintained kitchen is stocked with dishes, glassware and cookware so if you wanted to prepare full meals, you could definitely do so. But we did not! Certainly a cup of coffee in the morning while sitting on the very private balcony overlooking the Caribbean is a most delightful way to start the day. Many private accommodations have only cold water, and people may be accustomed to that; but I loved the hot water showers. There are plenty of bath towels as well as beach towels available. Knowing that there was a washer AND a dryer allowed me to be minimal with packing. And, of course, there is WiFi. We went into the walled city most days which was an easy walk. We could walk home at night but often took a taxi that was 6000-8000 pesos ($2-$3). Barbara, who speaks Spanish as well as English, knows the area well and was very helpful both before and during my stay. Highly recommended!!!
