(for seasonal equestrian events) and a mere two hour drive from the George Washington Bridge.
Arrive at the cedar cottage and open the door to stunning views and walls of glass. Completely renovated, the cottage boasts a fully equipped chefs kitchen, Roche Bobois dining table and chairs, and original art and antiques as well as delightful objects from “ThinkBig!” creator, Bob Malkin.
Soak in our charming, claw foot tub with river view after a day of hiking, golf, tennis, swimming, fishing or skiing and allow the stresses of every day life to vanish. Enjoy the warmth of our cast iron fireplace. Have a glass of wine on the wide deck overlooking the water, or walk our path to views of the Fernwood Falls. Swimming is superb by the falls. Your well-mannered dog is welcome at A Stream Side Cottage.
Our upstairs loft with its sloped ceiling is a magical kingdom for children. The trundle bed sleeps two, and there are cozy corners for reading and a desk overlooking the creek where your kids may find inspiration to sit down and write that essay on “Where I spent my summer vacation.” It’s bound to get an “A.”
Stroll over to the historic Fernwood Restaurant for cocktails and dinner. Garlic lovers? Don’t miss Emil’s table-made Caesar salad.

furnishings may result in loss of your damage deposit.
Please strip the beds before you leave. Turn down the thermostat.

attracts rodents, and “good karma” accrues to those who leave our
home much as they found it!
Refrain from bringing glass bottles or glasses to the stream. You will
find sturdy and colorful plastic glasses in the kitchen cabinets.

We recycle glass, plastic and cans, so please separate these items.
Tuesday is trash pick-up day, so please leave the trash can and bin
on the street side of the fence on Monday night.
We are dog lovers and ask that you clean up after your pet.

The Waterfall House and A Stream Side Cottage sit snuggled into an area so rich in history, where legend begat fact, that the neighborhood adds another layer of wonder to an already stunning setting.
It was this immediate area of Palenville that Washington Irving borrowed in 1819 for the setting for the epic slumber and awakening of Rip Van Winkle, drawing the then-young country's attention to the area. A few years later, the first of the pioneering artists of what became known as the Hudson River School of painting were pulled here, too.
The young Thomas Cole first visited here in 1825, to sketch nearby Kaaterskill Falls and other spots. The paintings he made from those sketched moved many other artists to flock to the area to try to capture it's awe-inspiring beauty, not only on canvas but also in poetry and prose.
Their glorious works, widely reproduced in the major periodicals of the day, attracted so many visitors that they in turn spurred the popularity of grand mountaintop hotels, which became favored destinations for all the giants of the 19th and 20th century.
The famed Catskil Mountain House, in 1823 the first resort in America, was as legendary in its time as any playground of the famous and powerful today. The Mountain House, and the others that followed, like the Hotel Kaaterskill and the Laurel House, attracted Twain, Sherman, Presidents Arthur and Grant, along with nobility and notables from all over the world.
This is the real Catskill Mountains, not the vacation areas in the foothills to the southeast that long ago misappropriated the name. The justly famed Kaaterskill Falls, the tallest in New York State, rendered and made famous by all the major Hudson River School artists, is no more than four miles up the road!
If you love nature and want to be close to hip towns this is the destination spot for you. Woodstock NY, and Saugerties are great places to shop, & dine. Yet nature in all its glory is at your doorstep.
