This was a great house for accommodating all the people and cooking we needed to do for the wedding that brought us to the area. The kitchen and the views were the best parts of the house for us - so much room in the kitchen and the views from the house were gorgeous. The pier was a great place to enjoy the water and one friend caught a large fish within a few minutes of his first cast. The house was only a few minutes from great shopping and restaurants and yet it is on large enough acreage that you do not realize there are neighbors. The owner was great to work with and was so helpful in setting up our stay and with tips for a good stay. We could not have been more pleased at choosing this house for our week in the Northern Neck area of Virginia. The security deposit was returned promptly. Our week here was special for many reasons and this lovely house only added that experience.
Wonderful wedding weekend! Our two families stayed (5 adults, 6 kids) in this stunning house for my brother's wedding weekend. We could not believe our luck. The house was spacious and functional, and beautifully decorated and kept. All the beds we needed, and lots of little amenities. We hosted 25 for a rehearsal dinner on Saturday night, complete with a gorgeous sunset view. The house was spacious and the grounds are really something special. I would come back in a minute! Don't think twice. The owners really try to make your stay easy and nice. Even though it's very rural in feel, there is a Walmart just 5 miles or so away!!
When we arrived at the River House we were met with a welcoming jar of crab salsa and a million dollar view. We were a party of three families with three children between the ages of 4 and 9. We spent every day swimming off the dock, canoeing, and crabbing. The house is warmly decorated, with plenty of seating areas, a screened in porch (wonderful for enjoying the view but escaping the bugs), a comfortable living room, a tv room, a large dining room table, and a beautiful area outdoors to eat or just soak in the view. The bedrooms are comfortable, a lovely master bedroom on the ground floor, and two bedrooms upstairs that can sleep four people each. We ate the crab we caught every night, our biggest haul being 28 crab. Our kids loved swimming in the warm water. We were anxious initially, since we had been warned that the water may not be safe to swim in because of jellyfish, but once the dog jumped in so did the kids. It was the beginning of August and a local told me that the jellyfish had come and gone by then. After that we swam all day long and our kids never got tired of cannonballing off the dock. The house is about four miles from Kilmarnock, and although it is very remote, the town has all that you need in the way of supplies. We enjoyed biking at Belle Isle Sate Park (you can rent bikes and kayaks there), went to Colonial Williamsburg, and explored the nearby towns Reedville and Irvington. Keep in mind, the location is remote and the pace is slow, but that is what we loved about it. I wish I could go every year!
We traveled with another family for a weekend retreat and had a wonderful time. Plenty of space, lots of toys (4 kids ranging from 2-5), great views and access to the water, and a welcoming and comfortable house with a well-stocked kitchen. Weather didn't cooperate but we still had fun.
