This was our eighth season renting the house at 571 South Shore Drive, with family members coming from Colorado, Portugal, and two cities in Michigan. That alone says something about how we feel about this place. The location on the water, in the woods, within a short walk or bike ride to the village of Northport is perfect. Also, it's just short drives to Suttons Bay, Omena, Leland, Lake Lelanau, and Glen Arbor if we feel like wandering away from Northport. The house is airy and open and is always spotlessly clean when we arrive. Dana and Joe are responsive and helpful if there are any concerns. The neighbors are friendly and welcoming. We have such wonderful memories about our stays at this house. The only thing about this rental I would change is that I wish we could stay there all summer! We're already looking forward to summer 2021.
Owner's Response: Dawn and Family - thank you for your kind words and taking the time for this review. Your family is awesome and so glad to have you as our guests each year, especially this crazy year of COVID! I hope you were able to get all of your annual Up North activities completed this summer.
We enjoyed our stay in Northport. The house is ideal for 2 couples (downstairs) and kids/friends (upstairs - sleeps 6 in one open room that stretches the width of the house). The renovated bath rooms are very well done, although I personally used the outside shower most of the time. The deck and common seating for a group of 8-10 is more than adequate. We've been to one other house in Leelanau (Sutton's Bay). This one is an upgrade because it's far enough away that you don't hear or experience M22 traffic. And, it's very well equipped. It's clear the owners take great care of it and spend time there themselves, so it doesn't feel like a rental. We had a great time and highly recommend this house, location, and of course Leelanau.
Owner's Response: Thank you David. I'm so glad your family enjoyed the stay with us and I'm thrilled you appreciated the outdoor shower - it's my favorite! I hope you will join us again Up North!
Our family of 6 adults had tons of room in this lovely home one mile south of downtown Northport. Walking to town was a beautiful and easy stroll. We parked our kayaks on the beach and could kayak in the bay at a moment's notice. We had wonderful weather and were busy with all the outdoor activities such as hiking the Empire Bluffs Trail, the Dune hike, the area wineries as well as wandering all the great towns such as Northport, Sutton's Bay, Glen Arbor and Traverse City. Loved the town of Northport, the Friday farmer's market, cute shops, Barb's Bakery, and The Mitten microbrewery. The town has a great. slow-paced local feel. The house itself had tons of games and books, if we had needed an inside day, we would have been all set. Lots of lovely outdoor seating in a partially shaded backyard, complete with hammock, tether ball and a water mat. The owner is a pleasure to work with and was always prompt in replying if I had a question leading up to our stay. We were there for a family reunion, along with family in 7 other homes and all agreed that this part of Michigan is something special. I especially loved sitting on the lower deck, early in the morning, and watching the beautiful sunrises over the bay. The home is in wonderful shape, the outdoor shower is fantastic, lots of bikes in the shed. We needed another couple of weeks to take full advantage of all that was there!
Owner's Response: Hi Laurie - Thank you for your kind words. I am so happy your family had a good week celebrating so many milestones and family togetherness. I hope you and your family are able to return to our little slice of heaven in Northport and enjoy all that our area has to offer. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Dana
Our extended family of nine has returned to this cottage in Northport for five years now, coming from across the United States and even across the Atlantic Ocean for our annual visits. This cottage is perfect for us: it's just one mile from a small Leelanau Peninsula town (not at all overrun by traffic and crowds like other similar places nearby). Our kids ride the cottage's bikes into town on their own; there's a grocery store, a lovely breakfast/lunch restaurant (Tribune), Barb's Bakery for AMAZING donuts, a farmer's market, a brewery, a marina ... I could go on and on. The house's location on Northport Bay gives us access to the beauty and open space of the larger Grand Traverse Bay, but minus the winds and waves of Lake Michigan's open water on the other side of the peninsula. The cottage has a small length of sandy beach, and we bring our water shoes for the rocky bottom as we wade out to the swimming pad. :) The cottage is stocked with kitchen supplies, linens and towels, bikes for riding, a LOVELY outdoor shower for washing off sand (so helpful with kids!), two separate decks for watching the sun rise with coffee in the morning, and a fantastic fire pit and chairs for evening s'mores. Northport is close to so many other wonderful spots on the peninsula: the lighthouse, Sleeping Bear Dunes, wineries (our favorite is Green Bird Cellars), Tandem Ciders, raspberry picking, sunsets at Peterson Park ... so much to love!
