How to Make the Most of Your Weekend in Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is beautiful, vast, and largely protected from development. It’s clear crystalline waters cover ground in both California and Nevada. HomeEscape has some great condos and vacation rental cabins available in Lake Tahoe, and here is how we would recommend spending the weekend:

Saturday:

Start the morning off right with a big breakfast from Fire Sign Café, a family-run place on the western shore of the lake in Tahoe City. After breakfast, get ready for a helicopter tour to scout out the vast expanse of Lake Tahoe. In your 40-minute flight, check out Emerald Bay, fly above waterfalls, and check out the renowned Sand Harbor (which you’ll visit tomorrow).

Afterward, it’s time to hit the trails. Remember, you’re at high altitude – the lake’s elevation is 6,225 feet – so take it slow, and carry plenty of water. For a very short but steep hike, you can get one of the most rewarding views – exploring the “beak” of Eagle Rock; extending out over the road from a sheer cliff near the shoulder. For the more adventurous hikers, check out the 10.5-mile round-trip to the summit of Mt. Rose, and enjoy incredible views from the top.

Don’t forget your “GORP” for the hike; stop by Tahoe Central Market for some trail-side provisions, and get your BBQ on afterward at Moe’s Original BBQ, right on the lake in Tahoe City.

Spend the afternoon strolling around Tahoe City. Check out the local shops and clothing boutiques within view of the lake. Have dinner at Wolfdale’s an Asian-European fusion restaurant with delectable dishes.

Sunday:

Grab a juice from Tahoe Central Market before heading to Sand Harbor, one of the lake’s most beautiful beaches; the shore is dotted with granite boulders, some small and some huge, all perfect for sitting on and enjoying the view. Tahoe City Kayak will meet you here for a guided four-hour tour by water of the area’s secluded beaches and coves, one of which will be a lunch stop.

In the afternoon, make sure to visit the Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park for heart-pumping zip lines and wobbly bridges in the trees.

To end your day (and calm your mind), get a massage at the Ritz-Carlton’s spa; after your treatment, you’ll have full access to the spa.
